Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (also known as RPI, Rensselaer, and the Institute) is a private nonprofit polytechnic university in Troy, New York chartered by the New York State Senate. Founded in 1824, it is the oldest technological university in the Western Hemisphere. RPI is divided into five schools; the School of Engineering, School of Science, School of Architecture, School of Humanities and Social Science, and Lally School of Management. RPI's curricula and course offerings heavily emphasize science and engineering.
