Guide:Accessing Syllabi via Heliocampus

Heliocampus is a tool used by RPI for various functionalities. If you've heard of it, it's probably because of course evaluations, but in recent years its syllabus access tool was opened up to the general student body. This tool contains data from the syllabi of hundreds of class sections going back many years, and is very useful for planning ahead or even getting an idea of what a course entails before syllabi are officially released. This guide describes how to access syllabi on Heliocampus and the limitations offered by the tool.

Accessing Heliocampus Syllabi

Begin by entering the Heliocampus website. There are several ways to get there:

Go directly to Heliocampus via assessment.rpi.edu.
Go to info.rpi.edu, and find Heliocampus under "Faculty and Staff Resources" or "Student Resources" (although they are two separate items, the links are identical).
Access this informational link on the Provost's website. Although it directs you to info.rpi.edu, it includes a helpful tutorial for using Heliocampus.

Sign in when requested. Open the sidebar to the top-left (the 3-by-3 grid icon), and click "Educational Experiences" and then "Course Sections". (Alternatively, you can choose "Courses", but it is less convenient to access syllabi from that page. Most steps, however, remain the same.)

Search for your course. It is highly recommended that you input the course code (e.g. ENGR-1100 or ENGR 1100) rather than the course name. This is because the name-based search tends to promote irrelevant classes, even over classes that are an exact match for the name you entered. Similarly, if there is a particular section you are looking for, consider including that in your search, because the results sort primarily by section number, such that ENGR-1100-02's syllabus in Spring 2026 will show up after ENGR-1100-01's syllabus in Fall 2021. When searching via course code, do not include dashes; search "ENGR 1100 02" instead of "ENGR-1100-02".

Find a course with "Syllabus Available" under "Course Section Content". When on the course, click "Course Syllabus".

As referenced earlier, some sections may not have syllabi accessible for some reason or another. If this is the case for the section you are interested in, do not worry, and try another section if it is available.

Warnings

Be warned that the older a syllabus is, the less likely it is to be representative of the class when you take it. This also applies by instructor: if the syllabus you are looking at is a different instructor than the one you are taking it with, the syllabus is less likely to be representative of the actual course. Even the most recent syllabi, with the same instructor are not guaranteed to remain accurate in the future: student feedback, instructor opinion, or shifting curriculum priorities can cause a course structure to change at any time.

If you are taking a class just because the syllabus you see has a low exam weighting, or no final, or no textbook, or anything else similar, be mindful of the above. If you think you can get a textbook for cheaper before the semester starts, be aware that you're taking the risk of it changing. If all of the most recent syllabi for all your classes have no final exam, wait until you know that's still the case before making travel plans.
