			WRPI was not the first radio station on campus. WHAZ-AM began operations in 1922, using antennas built on top of Russell Sage Laboratory sponsored by the Roebling Family. Eventually, this station was sold off.

			The FCC granted WRPI permission to begin broadcasts on December 4, 1957. For the first few years of its existence, the station was located inside the 15th Street Lounge (currently the Players' Playhouse), with a small antenna on the roof. Following the construction of the [[Darrin Communications Center]], WRPI moved to a purpose-built section of the first floor, where it resides today. WTEN-TV donated a large antenna in North Greenbush to the station, which is the one currently in use by the station (and is still there).

	The '''Big Red Freakout''' is an annual home hockey game held by the RPI men's ice hockey team, typically in the month of February and usually as one of the last home games of the season.		The '''Big Red Freakout''' is an annual home hockey game held by the RPI men's ice hockey team, typically in the month of February and usually as one of the last home games of the season. Freakout is something of a homecoming game, with many alumni returning to support the team.

			The first Freakout, held in February 1978, was against the University of New Hampshire where the Engineers won 6-5 in overtime. Since then, RPI has a 26-16-6 record during Freakout games, including a streak from 1991-2007 where the Engineers didn't lose once (either winning or tying).

			Gifts are given out by the Athletic Department to all in attendance. In 1987, the gift (a horn), resulted in the Brown coach complaining to the NCAA about the noise fans made with them during the game (an 8-3 RPI win). After this, the NCAA ruled that artificial noisemakers could not be brought into Division 1 hockey games (a statute known to some as the ''RPI Rule'').

Welcome to the '''RPI Wiki''', an in-progress project to catalog [[Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute]]'s rich history and provide lasting resources for new and returning RPI students.

RPI is the oldest engineering school in the Western Hemisphere, with 200 years of history. Its student life has evolved immensely in that time, and throughout its history it has been the ''alma mater'' of countless leading engineers and a flashpoint for political activism and student rights. It has the oldest continuously-existing student government in the United States in the [[Rensselaer Union]], and its model for polytechnic education informed the American engineering schools that came after it.

The RPI Wiki is a project intending to write this history down, from the Institute's proudest moments to its darkest, while also providing a resource for students akin to the various "Student Handbooks" or "Student Guides" of prior years. In this way, the RPI Wiki can serve as a resource to students, faculty, alumni, and prospective students, and make our Institute's history last forever.

			The office of ''Vice Chair of the Senate'' (alternatively known as Vice Chairperson or, historically, Vice Chairman) was established on October 18th, 1981, when Jeff Langan was approved as the first holder of the office.

			On November 13th, 2017, the Vice Chair of the Senate was renamed to the '''Vice Grand Marshal''', as motioned by the Internal Reforms Committee, an ad-hoc standing committee of the Senate<ref>[https://poly.rpi.edu/news/2017/11/2017-11-15-motion-responding-to-judicial-inquiries-tabled Darby Burns, the ''Polytechnic'': "Motion responding to judicial inquiries tabled"]</ref>. The change in title was made to clear up the Vice Chair's role relative to the Grand Marshal. There was a short debate on the exact name of the title, with some favoring "deputy" or "lieutenant" Grand Marshal. No changes were made to the now-Vice GM's role.

			In the XXth Senate, there was a motion to appoint a Deputy Grand Marshal, as the Vice Grand Marshal would be on their [[Arch]] away semester for part of the term. The motion narrowly failed.

			In the [[55th Senate]], the Vice Grand Marshal was also the Vice-Chair of Policy for the Student Life Committee, and as a result the line between the internal-facing side of the former office and the policy-facing side of the latter began to blur. Around the fall of 2024, proposals to split the office began to be floated, inspired partially by the split of the office of [[Vice President of the Union]] done in 2018. An initial proposal included two new roles, the Vice Grand Marshal for Union Affairs and Vice Grand Marshal for Institute Affairs. The VGM for Union Affairs was to oversee "Union-facing" committees (the [[Web Technologies Group]], [[Union Annual Report Committee]], the [[Student Government Communications Committee]], and a as-of-yet hypothetical committee for policy matters named the [[Rules and Administration Committee]], or RAC). The Vice Grand Marshal for Institute Affairs, on the other hand, would oversee the [[Academic Affairs Committee]], [[Student Life Committee]], [[Facilities and Services Committee]], [[Hospitality Services Advisory Committee]], and [[Community Relations Committee]].

			This proposal was never implemented, and in the [[56th Senate]] the only major structural change to the Vice GM's role was to make them acting chair of any unchaired committee (a role previously given to the Grand Marshal). However, over the 56th Senate, the tension between the two elements of the Vice GM's role grew, and by the [[57th Senate]] there was appetite for reform.

			Senate Motion 57-02 established the [[Rules and Administration Committee]], as proposed a year and a half earlier, but also split the position of VGM into two roles, now named the VGM for External and Internal Affairs, respectively. Although highly similar to the VGM split proposed earlier, with External Affairs being similar to Institute Affairs and Internal Affairs mapping closely to Union Affairs, there were several differences. Rather than simply overseeing RAC, the VGM for Internal Affairs would chair it in order to reduce friction between the two roles. In addition, rather than each VGM overseeing their own set of committees, the VGM for External Affairs oversaw all (except for RAC).

'''Save the Union''' was a student-led protest movement against attacks on the autonomy of the [[Rensselaer Union]] by members of the Institute administration. The first formal Save the Union protest was staged on March 30th, 2016, but the gradual removal of Union power and autonomy had been happening for years beforehand. The centerpiece of the protest concerned the hiring process for a new [[Director of the Union]], which the [[Rensselaer Union Constitution]] stated was to be conducted by the [[Executive Board]] but instead was led by members of the administration with minimal student input. Repeated crackdowns on student protests and efforts to conceal the situation from alumni and prospective students caused many to criticize the administration.

In 2023, a new [[President of the Institute]] was hired, and with it the Union steadily regained much of the autonomy it had prior to the protests. It is not clear what will happen when there is a vacancy in the office of the Director.

			Declining participation in Greek Life also drove change to the Senate. In 2014, the Independent Council chose to dissolve itself, claiming that independent students becoming a majority made many of the functions of the IC obsolete. In 2015, constitutional changes split the IFC and Panhellenic Council from the Senate, officially ending integration of Greek organizations into the Union. The Senate positions held by these three organizations remained, although now became generally elected. In 2023, two new Senator positions were added; one for the Multicultural Sorority and Fraternity Council and a third Independent Senator. 			The first Grand Marshal was elected in 1866, when Albert M. Harper was chosen to serve in the position. The position originally existed independently of any student governance structure, as none existed at the time, and served to represent the entirety of the student body. Little is known about the office of the Grand Marshal during this time, other than the fact that the elections served as a key event in the school calendar and were known for their lavish celebrations and parades, a set of traditions that would later evolve into [[Grand Marshal Week]]. 			In 1890, the [[RPI Union]] was founded (not to be confused with the modern Rensselaer Union). It is unclear whether or not the office of Grand Marshal existed in the earliest years of the RPI Union, and some speculate that the office of [[President of the Union]] replaced it<ref>[https://web.archive.org/web/20240919112617/https://archives.rpi.edu/blog/2009/03/27/a-gap-in-grand-marshal-history "A Gap in Grand Marshal History"]</ref>. By 1894, however, the position had been reestablished, and was considered the paramount leader of the Union, above even the President<ref name="bennett">Roots of Rensselaer, Cait Bennett.</ref>.

			In 1908, the RPI Union merged with the Rensselaer Students' Association to form the Rensselaer Union. Under the first Rensselaer Union Constitution, the Grand Marshal was one of the officers of the [[Executive Committee]], although again made lower in stature to the President. Records indicate that the Grand Marshal was required to be a senior at this time, but it is not entirely clear. In 1910, the Student Council was formed, with the Grand Marshal as its presiding officer, although it was not an organ of the Union at this time.

			The Student Council dissolved prior to the 1936 Union Constitution, which elevated the Grand Marshal to be equal to the President. 12 years later, the 1948 Union Constitution re-established the Student Council (now a full branch of the Union), with the Grand Marshal once again presiding, although they kept their seat on the Executive Committee (this was later reversed in the 1961 Constitution, where the Executive Commiteee became the [[Executive Board]]).

			In 1970, a new Union Constitution was approved, establishing the Student Senate as the replacement to the Student Council. The Grand Marshal retained its presiding position over the new legislature, which they maintain to the present day.
