The '''Senate-Executive Board Liaison''' (SEBL) is the primary point of contact between the Rensselaer Union [[Student Senate]] and [[Executive Board]], and serve as the representative for the opinions of the Senate on the Executive Board and vice versa. The SEBL is defined in the Union Constitution as one of the mandatory voting members of the Executive Board, alongside the [[Graduate Council]] and [[Undergraduate Council]] liaisons. Historically, the SEBL often served as the chair of committees pertaining to the setting of the [[Activity Fee]] (one of the only fiscal policy issues exclusively under the Senate's control), such as the [[Union Annual Report Committee]] or Fiscal Policy Committee.

== History ==

The predecessor to the Senate-Executive Board Liaison was established in the 1969 Constitution, as a "member from the [[Student Council]]" was mandated to be a member of the newly-formed [[Executive Board]]. Prior to the 1969 Constitution, the [[Grand Marshal]] had typically been a member of the [[Executive Committee]] ''ex-officio'', even when also presiding over the Student Council. In the 1970 Constitution, the Senate was the combination of the elected officials of the Graduate and Undergraduate Councils, so there was no direct Senate representation, only representatives of the two councils. The 1974 amendments to the Constitution ended this state of affairs but did not grant a Senate representative on the Executive Board, nor did the 1987 Constitution.

It is not clear when the office of Liaison came into existence. The earliest known copy of the Constitution mentioning it is the 2013 Constitution (although it would take until 2018 for it to be formally titled the Senate-Executive Board Liaison in the Constitution), but documents from the late 1990s and the early 2000s mention the position by its current name frequently. In the 39th Senate (2008-2009), the individual holding the office also served as a voting Senator, implying that the office of Liaison may have been non-voting until its formal establishment.

The '''Rensselaer Union Student Senate''' (usually known as the '''Student Senate''' or simply the '''Senate''') is the chief legislative and advocacy body of the [[Rensselaer Union]], responsible for initiating all legislative action into issues that affect the Union and advocating for the membership of the Union to the [[Institute administration]]. The Senate was formed in 1970, and is the successor to the [[Student Council]]. Together with the [[Executive Board]], it is considered one of the Union bodies most directly involved in the governance of the Union. It is presided over by the [[Grand Marshal]], and has a maximum voting membership of 29 Senators, elected from various constituencies from among the Union membership.

The Senate is currently in its 57th session, and is presided over by the 160th Grand Marshal, Jordan Krishnayah ‘28.

== History ==
The Student Senate was predated by the [[Student Council]] under the 1947 and 1969 Union Constitutions. It was originally established by the Union Constitution, although the existence of a "Student Senate Newsletter" weeks before the referendum for the Constitution suggests that it may have started operating before its approval. In its initial iteration, it was made up of the elected members of the [[Graduate Council]] and [[Undergraduate Council]], and was presided over by the Grand Marshal. This meant that in 1970, there were 12 voting members of the Student Senate;
* The Undergraduate Council;
** One representative from each of the four classes
** One representative from each of the [[Independent Council]] and [[Interfraternity Council]], at the time both subsidiary organizations of the UC
* The Graduate Council{{efn|The GC also included five "at-large members", but these were appointed and so, presumably, not members of the Senate.}};
** Representatives from the schools; two for the [[School of Science]], two for the [[School of Engineering]], one from the [[School of Management]], and one jointly representing the [[School of HASS]] and the [[School of Architecture]].

By 1974, the structure of the Senate had changed once more to resemble closely its modern structure. It included six graduate Senators, four from each of the undergraduate classes, and one Senator from each of the IC and IFC (who were now subsidiary to the Senate rather than the Undergraduate Council). By 1987, the [[Panhellenic Council]] had been brought into the fold as another subsidiary body, and the IFC Senator was turned into a Greek Senator representing both councils, which would become one Senator for each council in 2013.

Starting in the 1990s, the Senate began to take a more distant approach to Union governance beyond their role as a check on the other branches, a process accelerated by the changes in Institute presidential administrations and according attacks on the autonomy and self-governance of the Union. By the mid-2000s, its documentation ceased to mention the Union directly, although this would later be reversed in the 2010s during the [[Save the Union]] era.

Declining participation in Greek Life also drove change to the Senate. In 2014, the Independent Council chose to dissolve itself, claiming that independent students becoming a majority made many of the functions of the IC obsolete<ref>[https://poly.rpi.edu/opinion/2014/03/2014-03-26-amendments-include-ic-senators-terms-of-office-2 "Amendments include IC Senators, terms of office"]</ref>. In 2015, constitutional changes split the IFC and Panhellenic Council from the Senate, officially ending integration of Greek organizations into the Union. The Senate positions held by these three organizations remained, although now became generally elected. In 2023, two new Senator positions were added; one for the Multicultural Sorority and Fraternity Council and a third Independent Senator. In 2026, the three Greek Senator positions were merged into three at-large positions, with elections conducted to prioritize diverse council representation.

In practice, it is not uncommon for holders of many of the above roles to also be Senators, with the exception of the Senate-Executive Board Liaison due to the constitutional prohibition on holding a voting role on both boards. However, it is customary that the Secretary and Parliamentarian are not voting members, due to the expectation that these roles remain neutral in Senate proceedings.

==Structure and Operations ==

The Senate occupies a dual role in the Union's governance structure. It implements overarching policy for the Union, setting general priorities and rules (as compared to the Executive Board's day-to-day management of Union affairs), but also advocates on behalf of the student body on various issues not directly related to the Union as an organization. In the Senate's earliest days, it emphasized the policy-making approach more heavily, but since at latest the 1990s it has primary focused on student advocacy. It also holds a variety of checks on other branches of the Union, including but not limited to;
* The ability to propose constitutional amendments, subject to approval by the students, and to approve or deny all changes in the bylaws of all four other branches;
* The sole right to determine the recommendation of the Activity Fee;
* The ability to confirm the appointment of, and remove, members of the Executive Board and Judicial Board (with the exception of the UC-EBoard and GC-EBoard Liaisons); and
* The ability to set policy on selection and removal of all positions in the Union.

Most of the Senate's functioning comes from its various committees, each led by a Chair. Senators are required to attend committees, but they are open to any member of the Union to join and contribute. Committees generally meet weekly during the regular school year and every other week (or less frequently) during the summer.

It has the oldest continously-existing all-student government in the United States in the [[Rensselaer Union]], and its model for polytechnic education informed the American engineering schools that came after it.

The RPI Wiki is a project intending to write this history down, from the Institute's proudest moments to its darkest, while also providing a resource for students akin to the various "Student Handbooks" or "Student Guides" of prior years. In this way, the RPI Wiki can serve as a resource to students, faculty, alumni, and prospective students, and make our Institute's history last forever.

Download the Transit app, or the CDTA Navigator app, enter the address in "where to," and there will be directions with an ETA. Oliveg2: Typo fixes

Heliocampus is a tool used by RPI for various functionalities. If you've heard of it, it's probably because of course evaluations, but in recent years its syllabus access tool was opened up to the general student body. This tool contains data from the syllabi of hundreds of class sections going back many years, and is very useful for planning ahead or even getting an idea of what a course entails before syllabi are officially released. Welcome to the '''RPI Wiki''', an in-progress project to catalog [[Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute]]'s rich history and provide lasting resources for new and returning RPI students.

RPI is the oldest engineering school in the Western Hemisphere, with over 200 years of history. Its student life has evolved immensely in that time, and throughout its history it has been the ''alma mater'' of countless leading engineers and a flashpoint for political activism and student rights. It has the oldest continously-existing all-student government in the United States in the [[Rensselaer Union]], and its model for polytechnic education informed the American engineering schools that came after it.

The RPI Wiki is a project intending to write this history down, from the Institute's proudest moments to its darkest, while also providing a resource for students akin to the various "Student Handbooks" or "Student Guides" of prior years. In this way, the RPI Wiki can serve as a resource to students, faculty, alumni, and prospective students, and make our Institute's history last forever.

The Rensselaer Union is a student-run organization formed with the purpose of expanding extracurriculars, coordinating student organizations, and representing student interests. It is governed by the [[Student Senate]], [[Executive Board]], [[Judicial Board]], [[Undergraduate Council]], and [[Graduate Council]], which are established by its Constitution. The Union was founded in 1908 as a merger between the RPI Union and the Rensselaer Student Association, and has gone through numerous changes in structure since its founding.

The Union organizes and oversees [[List of clubs|over 200 clubs and organizations]], many of which it funds; operates the Union building, the [[Mueller Center]], and the [[RPI Playhouse]]; and employs a team of full-time staff and many student workers.

In the late 2010s, the Union became the focal point of a protest movement called [[Save the Union]], a reaction to efforts by the presidential administration at that time to diminish the Union's autonomy from the administration, most notably via the hiring of a [[Director of the Union]] without student government input.

The first known student-organization is the RPI Association, of which little is known beyond the fact that the Grand Marshal served as its head and appointed officers. The first of the organizations that would later become the Rensselaer Union was the RPI Union, founded in 1890. The RPI Union was overseen by a President, an office later to become the President of the Union; the Grand Marshal was later added as an additional officer. The RPI Union managed athletics and hosted social events, most notably semesterly dances, and eschewed student politics. The Rensselaer Student Association, on the other hand, was founded in 1906 to promote school spirit and "establish a true democracy in the student body". Little else is known about its operations.

In 1908, the RPI Union and Rensselaer Student Association merged to form the Rensselaer Union. Despite common belief, the Rensselaer Union was considered as distinct an entity from the RPI Union as it was from the Rensselaer Student Association.

Like many colleges, RPI students have the option to live on campus in residence halls. Most dorm residents are freshmen and sophomores, who are required to live on campus. Limited housing is also available for upperclassmen and graduate students, though many choose to live off campus in apartments or houses in Troy.
