WRPI was not the first radio station on campus. WHAZ-AM began operations in 1922, using antennas built on top of Russell Sage Laboratory sponsored by the Roebling Family. Eventually, this station was sold off.

The FCC granted WRPI permission to begin broadcasts on December 4, 1957. For the first few years of its existence, the station was located inside the 15th Street Lounge (currently the Players' Playhouse), with a small antenna on the roof. Following the construction of the [[Darrin Communications Center]], WRPI moved to a purpose-built section of the first floor, where it resides today. WTEN-TV donated a large antenna in North Greenbush to the station, which is the one currently in use by the station (and is still there).

For a relatively small school, RPI boasts a large number of student clubs and organizations. Due to the ephemeral nature of the populations of every student organization, all lists of clubs will become outdated. This list likely contains some clubs that are no longer active, and is missing some that are, but it will track as many of them as possible.

== Union Recognition ==
The [[Rensselaer Union]] organizes and oversees most clubs at RPI. The Union [[Executive Board]] designates clubs as recognized, funded, or affiliated. Recognized and funded clubs are constituted under the Union, with the only distinction being that funded clubs receive an operating budget from the Executive Board. Affiliated clubs are constituted under other Institute departments, and are acknowledged by the Union to be granted some benefits the Union offers to its subsidiary clubs, such as support from Union staff, the right to reserve Union-managed event spaces, and Union gift accounts.

In addition to granting recognized clubs some rights, the Union also imposes some rules on its clubs. All Union-recognized and funded clubs must be open to all members of the Union, and are prohibited from maintaining external financial accounts. These rules do not apply to affiliated clubs.

The Union also sorts clubs into categories. These categories have little effect on the Union's operations with a few key exceptions, and are mainly for the benefit of students and for the Union's organization. However, some of them come with specific rights or restrictions:

The '''Houston Field House''' is the location of the [[RPI Engineers]] men's and women's hockey teams<ref>https://rpiathletics.com/sports/2010/5/20/GEN_0520104208.aspx?id=2762</ref>. Opened in 1949, it is the second oldest rink in college hockey (behind Princeton's Hobey Baker Arena, opened in 1923), and its 4,800 seats make it the largest rink in the ECAC Hockey conference.

Despite popular belief, the Field House was not originally an aircraft hangar. Instead, it was a Navy warehouse in Rhode Island<ref name=":0">https://web.archive.org/web/20080513105624/http://www.rpi.edu/dept/aux_serv/fieldhouse/history.html</ref>. Following World War 2, the Institute purchased the warehouse as surplus, had it moved to Troy, and refurbished it. It was opened in October 1949 as the ''RPI Field House'' by Institute President Livingston W. Houston, during festivities for the Institute's 125th anniversary. Upon opening, the Field House could be converted for use as a basketball court. In addition, the playing surface could be converted to seating for large ceremonies. Many commencements were held at the Field House until [[East Campus Athletic Village|ECAV]] was completed in 2009.

For many years, the Field House was the largest arena in the Capital District. The '''Big Red Freakout''' is an annual home hockey game held by the RPI men's ice hockey team, typically in the month of February and usually as one of the last home games of the season. Freakout is something of a homecoming game, with many alumni returning to support the team.

The first Freakout, held in February 1978, was against the University of New Hampshire where the Engineers won 6-5 in overtime. Since then, RPI has a 26-16-6 record during Freakout games, including a streak from 1991-2007 where the Engineers didn't lose once (either winning or tying).

Gifts are given out by the Athletic Department to all in attendance. In 1987, the gift (a horn), resulted in the Brown coach complaining to the NCAA about the noise fans made with them during the game (an 8-3 RPI win). After this, the NCAA ruled that artificial noisemakers could not be brought into Division 1 hockey games (a statute known to some as the ''RPI Rule'').
